How can I fix errors in an OpenAlex author profile?

OpenAlex assembles author profiles algorithmically. We take the author names listed on hundreds of millions of publications and disambiguate them — deciding which names refer to the same real person — to build a profile for each of the world’s ~100 million authors. Modern disambiguation is very good, but at this scale it is never perfect: works occasionally get attached to the wrong profile, one author can end up split across duplicate profiles, and names aren’t always displayed the way an author prefers.

You can fix these problems yourself by claiming your profile.

Claim your profile

  1. Sign in to openalex.org (create a free account if you don’t have one).
  2. Go to your author page. If you’re not sure which profile is yours, search for your name and open the best match.
  3. Click the Claim button near the top of the page (“Take ownership of this author profile”).

Your claim goes to our team for a quick review. Once it’s approved, you own the profile and can curate it. You’ll see a “Claim pending” badge in the meantime.

Fix errors on a profile you own

From your claimed profile you can:

  • Add works that are missing — search for the work and add it, or upload a CV / publication list and we’ll match the works for you.
  • Remove works that aren’t yours — select the incorrectly matched works and remove them.
  • Correct your display name — set the name you want shown on the profile.
  • Merge duplicate profiles — if more than one profile exists for you, combine them into one.

Curation requests are reviewed by our team before they go live in the database. Adding and removing works also updates the fields that are derived from your works — alternate names, institutional affiliations, topics, and citation metrics — so you don’t (and can’t) edit those directly; fix the underlying works and the rest follows.

Correcting a profile that isn’t yours

You don’t have to be the author to help. Anyone signed in can suggest corrections, and our curators review them the same way. This is useful for librarians, research-office staff, and co-authors cleaning up profiles on someone’s behalf.
