OpenAlex data is free for everyone, everywhere, under a No Rights Reserved CC0 public-domain license — no “personal use only” carve-out and no permission to ask. Keeping it that way is a deliberate, funded plan built on the Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure (POSI), to which OpenAlex has made a formal commitment (latest self-assessment).
OpenAlex is governed by OurResearch, a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a decade-long track record of open scholarly infrastructure (Unpaywall, Unsub). All code is open source; the full dataset is open under CC0.
Free data, paid services
Scholarly metadata is treated in most markets as “the new oil” — value is captured by limiting access. OpenAlex takes the opposite position: the data is a public good and is completely open and freely reusable, and revenue comes from time and services layered on top rather than from the data itself. That means higher-volume, faster access for commercial providers and heavy users who need it, while the underlying data stays free for everyone. This mirrors the POSI principle of revenue based on services, not data.
OpenAlex was established with a $7.5M grant from Arcadia; paid services are projected to reach full financial sustainability by 2028. Co-founder and CEO Jason Priem walks through the model, and the most common questions about it, in this video.
Insurance against capture
Open data and open source function as a guarantee to the community. As a nonprofit, OpenAlex is not an attractive corporate-takeover target — and if the team disappeared, or a future board tried to sell off assets, anyone could take the open dataset and open-source code and continue the mission. Several groups already have the capability to do exactly that. The mission does not depend on any single organization.
What stays free
The core OpenAlex data is free forever: hundreds of millions of works and all associated metadata, free to download, share, remix, and build on under CC0, with public snapshots released quarterly. Paid services — faster and higher-volume API access, daily sync, and support — fund the open infrastructure without gating the data.
