Legacy plans
OpenAlex’s plan lineup has changed over the years. The current annual plans are Member, Member+, and Partner — but if you signed up under an older name, here’s what it means for you.
Premium and Institutional
Before the current lineup, OpenAlex sold Premium (higher API limits and priority support for individual organizations) and Institutional (the same, plus training and advisory services for academic institutions) subscriptions.
If you have an existing Premium or Institutional contract, it will be honored — nothing about your agreement changes out from under you. In addition, you now receive all the newer Member-tier benefits at no extra cost:
- Admin dashboard — manage your organization’s users and billing
- Affiliation editor — curate how affiliation strings match to your institution (academic & government)
- Unsub access (academic & government)
- Advisory board nominations and quarterly supporter meetings
When your contract comes up for renewal, you’ll renew onto one of the current plans — your contact at OpenAlex will help you pick the tier that matches what you have today, or just email sales@openalex.org.
Older API limits
You may find references around the web to older API tiers — for example a flat “100,000 calls per day” limit, or “polite pool” email addresses. Those describe retired systems. Today’s model is usage-based: $1/day free for every account, prepaid usage beyond that, and annual plans with much larger daily budgets. See the API authentication docs for how keys and budgets work now.
